On the brilliance of the British summertime ...

WimbledonAhhhh! There's nothing quite like the sound of pouring rain to start off the last week in June - yes, it must be the beginning of Wimbledon fortnight (although it sounds like there wasn't much tennis played at SW19 today!) Slept really badly last night, so was not in a happy mood when I woke up this morning to grey skies and rain. Had to put more wintry clothes on too since I had playground duty at breaktime. We've got our school Sports Day on Wednesday afternoon, so fingers crossed that the weather improves a bit by then.

I suppose at least the lack of tennis on TV will mean I might actually get on with my reports tonight without too many distractions. I did watch the football yesterday, but actually managed to spend a solid couple of hours slaving over them once it had finished. The countdown to the summer holidays is definitely on now ... although there are still five more weeks of school to go. I'm just keeping sane by imagining my holiday to Tenerife and birthday trip to Paris. Can't wait : )

On England v. shopping ...

BeckhamsWhat a sexist world we live in! Time for a Sunday morning rant ... Why is it that in this country, if you are a man it is assumed that all you want to do is watch football and if you are a women, all you want to do is go shopping?! Yes, I do enjoying a little shop now and then (ahem! - read previous blogs to fully appreciate this understatement), but although I don't normally watch football, I did watch the World Cup opening match on Friday and England v. Paraguay yesterday afternoon. The boyfriend, on the other hand, does not like football AT ALL. Does this mean he is a freak of nature? He only took a passing interest on Friday because Poland were playing and he got them in the sweepstake at work, but because they lost 2-0, he's not really bothered anymore! And all this talk of 'football widows' is just so pathetic.

On Friday, I received an email from a certain shoe shop offering a 15% discount on any pair of shoes you buy on a day when there is an England match on. My first reaction was one of joy (I love shoes and I love a discount even more), however this turned to mild annoyance when I read on. Obviously, if you are a woman and your man is busy watching the football and ignoring you, the only option left to you is to go shopping! The email ended with the statement: Support your nation - look good! How patronising is that?! Even the Beckhams have managed to break the stereotype to a certain extent. Yes, Victoria does have a reputation for shopping, but even she watches football sometimes! Yes, David is a 'real' man because he plays football, but doesn't he have a fondness for those designer labels too?!
